Alaska Airlines just came up with a unique way to offer discounts on flights by linking the visibility of the Northern Lights to the airfare. The airline ran a similar promotion last year when it offered discounts based on wave size. Alaska feels that the Northern Lights are a true experience to enjoy and wants to help you save money to see this unique beauty of nature.

The airline will offer a discount based on the brightness of the aurora forecast. The brighter the lights, the more you save, with discounts up to 35 percent. It will use data provided by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute. The promotion is available now through January 17. It is valid for flights from a departure city in the lower 48 states to Fairbanks or Anchorage till February 12.

Alaska is one of the best places on the planet to see the Northern Lights. Since the airline offers more flights to the state than any other airline, the carrier certainly knows a thing or two about the Northern Lights. In fact, the airline's employees can even offer advice on where travelers should go to get the best view of this awesome phenomena.

According the terms and conditions, the discount is determined by the Kp index and the discount is broken down down as such:

  • 0 to 3 Kp = 15 percent off
  • 4 to 5 Kp = 20 percent off
  • 6 to 7 Kp = 25 percent off
  • 8 to 9 Kp = 35 percent off

To take advantage of the promotion, go to Alaska's dedicated sales page. Then, just enter a departure city in the lower 48 and a destination of either Anchorage or Fairbanks. You must make sure to use the discount code BOREALIS, and flights must take place between January 13 and February 12.
