In response to customer requests for a more 'living room' type of experience when flying domestically, American Airlines has launched free live TV on some domestic routes. The new service will stream to the personal devices of passengers and is expected to be available on all domestic flights by the end of 2019.

American Airlines already offers this service on a majority of its international flights. Extending it to its domestic flights was the next logical step. The airline has stated that it will also update seating on the aircraft so passengers will have a charge port available during their flights.

American Airlines has opted to provide passengers free streaming service to their personal devices instead of the seatback entertainment screens being used by other airlines. The seatback screens add weight to the aircraft and have the potential to break or malfunction. This would lead to customer dissatisfaction during flights and added costs to the airline altogether.

The airline stated that the new live TV service will offer 12 of the most popular live TV channels and will be available from gate-to-gate for flyers. These free channels are in addition to the entertainment packages already available to travelers. American Airlines currently offers a large selection of television programs and on-demand movies passengers can choose from.

The airline has stated that it plans to have its entire fleet equipped with this service by the end of 2019. During this time, the carrier will also be upgrading its planes to offer better Wi-Fi service as well as more power outlets dedicated for passengers' use. All these enhancements are anticipated to be completed by the end of 2021.
