Amtrak is offering a deal that might make you want to skip the airport and get to your next vacation destination by rail. Travelers who buy tickets during the current Amtrak sale can bring a companion along for free when they book a roomette. This two-for-one offer is running on Amtrak.com from Dec. 4 until Dec. 11. The offer is valid for travel between Jan. 7 and May 23 of next year. Here's a sample of some of the routes that can be scooped up during the sale:

  • Washington, D.C. to Chicago for $275
  • New York to Chicago for $344
  • Orlando to Washington, D.C. for $314
  • Chicago to New Orleans for $269
  • Chicago to Denver for $329
  • Los Angeles to Seattle for $378
  • Los Angeles to San Antonio for $347

Amtrak's roomettes come with complimentary meals, comfortable sleep areas, bed linens, pillows, bedside storage compartments and temperature controls. In addition, the price for each roomette covers linen service, towel service and access to Amtrak ClubAcela and Metropolitan Lounges where available.

Roomettes are ideal for travelers looking for scenic, cozy travel experiences during the upcoming winter and spring seasons. How do the sleeping arrangements work in these pod-like areas? Each roomette features sliding doors and two inward-facing seats. Those seats can be converted into a bed when it's time to sleep. In addition, a bunk bed folds down from the roomette's ceiling. Travelers can also take advantage of nearby showers and meals when they book roomettes. Happy booking!
