Everyone loves to travel home for the holidays. Airlines know this, and fares almost always increase around Christmas. Finding the most affordable option for flying home is not impossible, but it takes a little patience.

After conducting a lot of research, travel experts have found that you are likely to secure the best price for Thanksgiving travel during the first week of October. On October 1st, you can probably secure round trip airfare anywhere in the country for about $387.00. After that week, prices are going to increase.

For Thanksgiving, travelers should remember that flying in on Thanksgiving itself is the cheapest. You should keep in mind that the Sunday after Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the entire year, and you will need to give yourself plenty of time at the airport.

For those who wish to travel home for Christmas, your best pricing dates should fall during the week of October 15th. During this period, you should be able to secure the rate of about $357.00 anywhere in the U.S. for round trip airfare. Thereafter, prices will begin to dramatically increase. Traveling on the Friday before Christmas, December 21st, will be the most expensive date this year.

If you want to secure the best rates, it pays to sign up for travel alerts from Google Travel or similar programs. These sites will alert you to when you can find the best deals on the tickets you are looking for this holiday season.

Another way to reduce your prices is to fly early or fly late in the day. You can also reduce your flight costs by flying into smaller airports or using budget airlines.
