According to a recently released report by The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), Frontier Airlines has been ranked the top American carrier for fuel efficiency. This report assessed the fuel efficiency of US carriers on domestic operations in 2017 and 2018.
Coming up tops, the study attributed Frontier Airlines' spectacular result to the ultra low-cost carrier's utilization of the Airbus A320neo aircraft. For those who don't already know, the Denver-based airline operates the biggest A320neo fleet in the United States. The newer A320neo plane is undoubtedly more fuel-efficient, and quieter, compared to its predecessors.
Besides the use of this aircraft type, Frontier Airlines' seat configuration, baggage process and various weight-minimizing tactics are said to have contributed to the carrier's fuel savings.
To put things into perspective, Frontier Airlines has a pretty significant lead over the rest of the US-based airlines. Two US carriers tied for the second spot, but burned 7% more fuel for the same amount of transportaion service compared to Frontier Airlines.
Also, Frontier Airlines' lead in overall domestic fuel efficiency is remarkable; its fuel efficiency is a whopping 26% better than the worst performer and up to 15% better than the biggest carriers in the United States.
While Frontier Airlines is thrilled to be America's greenest carrier, it is certainly not resting on its laurels. Frontier Airlines has made it clear it remains 100% committed to making its business a more sustainable one. The airline shared that the 102 million gallons of fuel it saved in 2018 alone is roughly the amount of carbon produced to create 359 billion straws. The amount of carbon emissions it avoided is equivalent to planting more than 14 million tree seedlings.
