Travelers can finally get a head start on planning for the upcoming summer travel season now that Southwest Airlines has launched its summer fare sale. Travelers can look forward to booking one-way fares starting at just $49 during this flash sale event. In addition, there are one-way fares for many destinations going for $79, $99, $129 and $149.

There's no doubt that Southwest is motivated to unveil its summer travel deals as early as possible this year. The airline has acknowledged that ticket sales have been hurt following a fatal engine explosion that took place on a flight in April. Travelers only have a short window of time to take advantage of the rock-bottom rates that are being rolled out as part of the airline's summer promotion. The sale actually ends on Friday. However, the travel dates that are covered as part of the deal are good between June 5 and Oct. 31.

Where can travelers go using discounted summer fares from Southwest this year? The airline is offering a nice variety of departure points and destinations. The list of departure points covers major hubs like Austin, Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Denver, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York City and Portland.

In addition, smaller hubs like Wichita, West Palm Beach, Birmingham, Boise and Charlotte are also included. Flights are available to virtually every corner of the country under the deal. Some notable destinations that can be chosen include Orlando, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego, Nashville and Seattle.

One quick note, fares are not available for flights to or from Portland, Maine. Exclusions and restrictions apply to these nonrefundable fares, too. Those who are looking for the cheapest fares should fly nonstop on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
