Spirit Airlines isn't showing any signs of slowing down when it comes to growing its presence in the Caribbean. The popular budget carrier just debuted a string of new direct flights to Cancún from popular cities thorough the United States. Here's a look at the newest Cancún connections from Spirit: Austin; Cleveland; Nashville; Philadelphia; and Pittsburgh.

The new additions mean that Spirit now offers a total of nine daily direct flights to Mexico's Cancún International Airport. Spirit actually has a long history with Cancún. You might even say that the carrier owes some of its success to the sunny destination - Cancún was actually the first international destination served by Spirit.

Travelers will have a few options to work with when selecting travel dates for Spirit's newest Cancún-bound cities. Cancún flights from Cleveland and Austin will be operating on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Nashville and Pittsburgh flights will be running on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Service from Philadelphia will be available daily.

Spirit's announcement regarding new routes to Cancún will come as good news for Mexico's struggling tourism industry. Violence, bad press and warnings from the State Department have caused tourists from the United States to stay away from some popular resort areas in Mexico in recent months. In 2019, Cancún actually saw a decline in tourism for the first time in seven years. Mexico's government abruptly made the decision to shutter its tourism board last year.
